These aren’t your average sandwich. We’re taking things up a notch with shredded bison (or ground bison you cook yourself) for a flavorful twist.

The Beauty of BBQ:

This recipe is your canvas for flavorful exploration. Choose your favorite BBQ sauce to create a taste bud party:

  • Smoky Satisfaction: Craving a deep, smoky BBQ experience? Seek out sauces infused with hickory or mesquite smoke.

  • Sweet & Tangy Tango: Prefer a balanced flavor profile? Opt for BBQ sauces that blend sweetness and tang, often achieved with brown sugar, molasses, and vinegar.

  • Bold and Adventurous: Feeling like a culinary explorer? Unique BBQ sauce varieties like chipotle or bourbon can add a surprising kick.

Beyond the Basics: Level Up Your BBQ Bison Game!

While the core recipe is delightfully simple, there’s plenty of room for culinary creativity:

  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a sprinkle of your favorite hot sauce for an extra flavor dimension.

  • Veggie Bonanza: Incorporate roasted vegetables like peppers, onions, or zucchini for added nutritional value and textural delight.

  • Creamy Counterpoint: Balance the smokiness of the BBQ sauce with a dollop of sour cream or creamy avocado for a touch of richness.

  • Bun Variations: Swap the hamburger buns for pretzel buns for a hint of saltiness, brioche rolls for a touch of luxury, or even lettuce wraps for a low-carb option.

Time-Saving Hacks for Busy Bees:

  • Pre-cooked shredded bison is your best friend here. Make this ahead of time with this Simple Bison Roast Recipe.

  • Leftover cooked ground meat can be easily revived in this recipe.

  • Toast your buns in advance while the bison simmers for added warmth and texture.

Directions

Shred the Bison: Once your bison roast is cooked and has cooled enough to handle, use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.

Warm the Barbecue Sauce: In a large pan over medium heat, warm the barbecue sauce. You can adjust the amount of sauce according to how saucy you prefer your sandwiches.

Combine Bison and Sauce: Add the shredded bison to the pan with the barbecue sauce. Stir well to ensure the meat is thoroughly coated with the sauce. Continue to cook for about 5-10 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is heated through.

Assemble the Sandwiches: Scoop a generous amount of the barbecue bison mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. If using any optional toppings like coleslaw, pickles, sliced onions, or cheese, add them on top of the bison.

Serve: Cap the sandwiches with the top halves of the buns. Serve immediately while warm.

Recipe Note

For even more flavor toast the buns: While the bison mixture is warming, toast the buns. You can do this in a toaster oven, under the broiler for a minute or two (watching carefully to prevent burning), or on a grill. Toasting the buns adds a nice texture and flavor contrast to the sandwich.
